She knew that I did theatre in high school so she asked me if I wanted to be the group leader for a club. I thought it sounded pretty fun so I said sure.

So I found myself in charge of 13 kids between 4th and 6th grade. We had good times as we learned about Upstage Left and Down Center Stage. I (kind of) taught them how to project their voices. We even did a few improv games. Then came the time to decide what we were going to do for our Parent Showcase. Well it made sense to have them put on a play but the tough part was figuring out what play. It could only be about 10 minutes because all of the other clubs were doing something for their parents too. So I decided to bring out the Shakespeare in me and write a play. It's called the 3 Wolves. It's the stories of the 3 Little Pigs mixed with Little Red Riding Hood and the Boy Who Cried Wolf. We'll see how it goes since 2 of the kids have moved, another told the other kids that I was "stupid" and quit coming and another just stopped showing up. I've combined as many parts as I could but if on Dec. 2nd a kid doesn't show up I just might have to make an appearance on stage... let's hope they all show!

So that's my story. It's been a lot of fun but a little stressful as well so I don't think that I'll be able to do it again next semester.

Shakepeare Superstars

That's the name of the 4H club that I'm in charge of. I wasn't paying attention when I was clicking around in Dashboard.

John told me that he lost one game in the middle of the day yesterday but I watched another of his games last night and they pulled off a thrilling last minute win. I saw him score a couple baskets at the beginning and a steal (or pass from the other team right to him) later on. He looked pretty good. I was talking to him after the game while we had a Jamba, he needs to be a little more aggressive on the rebounds but I really can't say much, I wasn't the most intense basketball player (unless you count my two steals I had in church ball).

Just FYI: I have a meeting with the counselors at 4 and then dinner. After dinner we are with the campers. Basketball has practice/games until 9 so we just watch. Other sports have free time we have to figure out what to do, like play games or go get ice cream.

Winning

I just watched John's team win a game at Sports Camp. Last Wednesday I went the counselor retreat and today the games begin.

The retreat was at Spring Haven where we spent about 2 hours actually discussing what's going to happen at the camps the rest was spent playing games. Around midnight I was rather tired so I pulled out the inflatable mattress that I borrowed from Brent and Amber put it in the middle of the room where the piano was being played, ESPN was on and yelling and cheering could be heard through the open door where volleyball was being played. I fell asleep in a matter of minutes and the next morning not only were all the boys jealous (I was the only one to bring a mattress) but the girls were all impressed that as they all were leaving out half of the lodge to go to bed that with all the noise I could stay asleep. I can sleep through just about anything.

Let's just hope that if children are in mortal danger or are in the process of ripping a door off it's hinges that I'd wake up for that.

Online Gallery

Here's the Gallery. I thought I left it at home when I went there for conference weekend. My phone went dead on Wednesday and I lost contact with the world. When I went back on Friday night it was nowhere to be found. In Provo I had cleaned my room three times and went through my apartment twice, I couldn't find it. Finally, yesterday I broke down and bought a new charger. I came home, plugged it into the wall and I found my lost charger sitting on the floor below the socket. I have no idea where it came from.

It's Offical

I guess it's been almost a week and I should probably make the formal announcement. Sara an I are engaged. I proposed last Saturday while we were walking on the path by the ponds. We stopped at the Utah House and after sitting there for a bit, as I was coming up with what to say, I finally said "There's just no good way to lead into this" and I got down on one knee and asked Sara Caroline Behnke if she would marry me and she said yes.

She had a good idea that it was coming though, when we left Provo we picked up Brent so that all the boys could go to the Priesthood session together. Brent didn't answer his phone so Sara ran up to the door to get him. Sammi and Amber answered and while Amber was going to get Brent, Sammi said "I have a ring for you, no, my daddy has a ring for you. Let me go get it." The night before when Sara's mom was visiting we went to Brent and Amber's to play some games and while Amber was distracting Sara I showed her mom the ring but I wasn't able to put the ring in my jacket and so I left it there. Sammi saw Brent putting the ring in his bag and she asked about it and Brent explained that Uncle Will was going to give it to Aunt Sara. Well Sammi got a little confused about that fact and just know that Aunt Sara was going to get a ring. She couldn't find Brent's bag so instead she grabbed the Safari Mr. Potato Head and showed Sara the earring that was on it but by that point Sara had a pretty good idea of what was going to be happening.

I Got It!

Last night I was sworn to secrecy because the other applicants hadn't been informed of the decision to make me the new Student Manager. Their son Ted, who's room I lived in for 6 months, got married in San Diego on Friday and they drove the wedding presents here and before they even went to their apartment they stopped in at Smith's. Last Thursday (the 15th) I got a call from Sara saying "We're planning a road trip to California, we're leaving tomorrow at 4:00 if you want to come." I said I'd think about it, thirty seconds later I thought "What is there to think about?"

We slept at Sara's Aunt's house in Riverside and spent all day Saturday at the beach. Sunday at church and at the park. We got up at 4:30 on Monday to get back to the beach for the sunrise. I had a bunch of friends down for the game and Brent and Amber were so kind as to cook us all a bunch of Japanese food and let us wtach the game there. Ryan and Jeff were the Utah fans, Rob and I were for Alabama and Eric played the neutral party. The Utes came to play and they won the game and about halfway throught the thrid quarter (still with plenty of time for Alabama to come back and win the game) I came to the concluision that I wouldn't mind at all if Utah won, and they did so it's all good.

You wanna mess wit' us?

Saturday was the big BYU men's basketball game against #6 Wake Forest. The Real Salt Lake game was intense but I think this one beat it. I've never been so worked up in my life. The lead changed almost a dozen times, there were contriversial calls, stuff was thrown on the court, BYU's coach took the mic and told us all to clam down, it was nuts. The final score doesn't reflect how close the game was, Wake Forest pulled away in the last minute because of fouls and whatnot. The Stockmans are a nice old southern couple. Whenever we went on a team-up with Brother Stockman he would clear his sinuses are spit out the window of his car all the while speaking in a sweet southern drawl out the side of his mouth. Sister Stockman is the nicest lady who was about 5 feet tall with snow white hair. They are some great members.

Anywho, we had dinner at there house and we had the most wonderful Pecan Pie I've ever tasted and Sister Stockman was kind enough to give me the recipe. Sunday night we had a pre-Thanksgiving potluck over at Sara's place and I decided that I was going to make this pie. After slaving away this was my final product:

Baked Goodness

It's too bad it didn't taste as good as it looked. You see, I decided to make two pies and after I had the ingredients combined I realized I didn't have enough Corn Syrup. I called Brent and Amber and they were kind enough to let me borrow some. The problemn arose when I had to leave the the mixture to get more syrup. The melted butter solidified and it just didn't mix well.

I baked the pies and then tasted one of them and they just were not good. They tasted like eggs and were not sweet. So although they looked beautiful they didn't taste that way. It was tragic.

GOOOAAAALLLLLL!

If only that was what was yelled at the Western Conference Finals this past weekend. On Saturday night Erik Gunn and I attened the Western Conference Fianls at Rio Tinto Stadium located in Sandy Utah just a block west of Jordan Commons. Erik's dad knows a guy so we had some great seats 7 rows up and to the back left of the goal.

During the first half the New York Red Bulls (don't ask why they are in the Western Confernce, nobody knows) scored a goal. For the second half Real Salt Lake was trying to score on our end. They had so many shots and they either went off the posts or was just a little wide. It was an intense game that ended in an intense loss 0-1. But it was totally worth going.

Erik and I were the first in the Stadium (we were there a bit early)

NY Red Bulls in White and Real SL in Red. Just please understand when I say "Come on!"

Mike, first you must understand I had spent the entire day walking up and down the Wasatch Bench in Sandy with houses that had at least a dozen steps. Then after that I went and played some intense Laser Tag in which I placed 5th out of the 24 people playing. I was tired and looking forward to the fact that when I was going to crawl into my bed at 11:30 it was really like I was going to bed at 10:30.

Now that I look back on it, the chicken could have saved my life. If I didn't want to marinate that piece of chicken I could have easily climbed in bed and fallen asleep only to be attacked minutes later. But there I was soaking a piece of poultry in soy sauce and brown sugar and I hear you slam the door and come down the hall laughing. I don't recall exactly what you said, all that I remember is that you said you heard purring, you poked around and now our room was full of bees.

It took a while but I finally understood that you had heard some sound, like purring, coming from the wall by the window and you started poking the wall. You found a soft spot, thinking it was water damage poked a little more. Your finger went through and when you pulled it out not only did your finger come but so did yellow and black flying insects! I remember looking for some type of spray to kill them but having Lysol as our most deadly spray we just weren't a match for the swarm on the wall and the half a dozen or so flying through the air. It was time to retreat and call the office.

They sent over some guy who only had a spray that takes 24 hours to kill the things because you spray it on the hive and let them distribute the poison amongst themselves. I'm not sure why after he sprayed them that we wern't supposed to kill them because we weren't sure if they were bees or yellow jackets. If they were bees then they are protected and we weren't allowed to kill them, yet this man had already sprayed the hive... again, a little confused by the situation.

Well I just couldn't wait. I called my brother to see if I could stay there and he said yes so I entered the room one last time to grab some things and I was off. The thing about going to my brothers was that my two year old neice, Sammi, had fallen asleep that afternoon at about 4:30 and they were unable to wake her so she had woken up at 12:30 ready to play. That was bad news for Brent and Amber but it didn't matter to me, I could sleep through just about anything at that point, and I did.

I came home Sunday to find that you waited until about 4AM to get to bed, doing so after placing tape over the hole:

The wonders of Duct Tape

Then to find that the ones that decidedt o play around for a bit were eventually attracted to the light in our room only to their own demise.

"Stay away from the lights!" When it came to be my turn I just stood up and talked and it was all good.

New Roommate

I forgot to mention. First off, Sunday night I convinced Eric Danielson to come down and hang out so I was looking forward to him coming down but before I could do anything with him I had a Econ Test to take. I had gone to two review sessions and I was feeling good about the test and I must say that they helped. I got 92%. I'm feeling pretty good about the class right now. I'll find out what the class average was tomorrow. Next Eric came down and we had some good times just doing random things. I did have to go to work for a bit but it was all good. After making a brief appearance at FHE (we helped get some pizza for them) we went to a birthday party for Eric Merrill, a friend from Freshman year. We finished up the night be watching Forbidden Kingdom, another telling of the Chinese Classic, the Monkey King, which I slept through.

Tuesday rolled around and I had my many classes to go to and work down in Spanish Fork the day just flew by highlighted by the ride home that night.

Wednesday was great. For Econ we watched a Forum that Prof. Pope gave last year on his work in Air Pollution and the external costs of companies. A good speech but I decided that a nap would fit nicely in the middle of it. Swimming went well but it turns out that it's my swimming that's been making me to healthy... The night was finished off with a traditional gathering at the apartment for a classic movie, The Sting. Throw in a little more scooter riding to take Julie home and it was time to call it a night.

Too Healthy

I'm eating a bowl of rice and chili right now because I'm too healthy to give plasma today, my blood pressure is too low.

One Crazy Weekend

I'm not even sure what all happened this weekend. Garan and Jessie were married on Friday. After my 8 AM Econ class I borrowed Brent's car and went to the Bountiful Temple. The Sealing was great, they got the pictures with the friends first so we could take off, and the luncheon was fun. Erik and I went in search of the finishing touch for our wedding present but couldn't find it so we resorted to buying things to decorate their car. I then went to the Bushell's to get my picture taken and it was off the reception. I finished up the night by doing my Physics homework over at Rob McDonald's house while my friends tried to help... it was rather entertaining.

After spending the night at Jeff's house (because Allie, Lee, Jeff and Laura were at our home) I got ready for Grandpa's surprise party before heading down to Provo. The party was a lot of fun. I don't think I've even seen Grandpa so emotional. He truly was surprised. I was great to listen to each his kids tell stories about him and things that they learned from him. It was a wonderful experience.

After the party Allie, Lee, Jeremy and myself headed down to Provo for the game (Dad and John took off as soon as the cake was eaten and half of the pictures were taken). As we went outside to the parking lot of the restaurant it was snowing a very wet snow, which was great to see. Traffic was clear the entire way down to Provo. Even on University Parkway the traffic wasn't any worse than on a normal day, which made it possible for me to be in the stadium 15 min after kickoff. BYU won, it wasn't an amazing win but it was a win none the less. To cap off the evening I went on a date with Julie. I know Julie from working at Jamba Juice. I asked her to one of the Homecoming Dances. We went to Brick Oven Pizza with a group (mainly people I know from High School) and then to the dance. After the dance when I took Julie home she asked if I wanted some hot chocolate so we enjoyed some hot chocolate and then played a game of Doctor Mario on her Nintendo. It was a great night.

Sunday was Elizabeth's blessing so the family was together again. I've never been part of a blessing and it was a neat experience. Brent hadn't asked me to be part of the circle so when the Bishop announced her blessing and asked for Brent and those he invited to come up I had to look at Brent to see if he wanted me. I could see the debate in his mind and I think the only reason he nodded was because Dad was giving him the evil eye. We had fun lunch at Brent and Amber's, it was there that I remembered about a vegetarian potluck that I had been invited too but had nothing to bring. Luckily for me Amber was kind enough to donate some things for me to put together a very nice Vegetarian Chili. After the wildly successful potluck I headed back to Brent and Amber's to return the spices they let me borrow, oh and Brent's car too and was tricked into playing a game... okay so that's a lie, I was looking forward to playing with them. After beating them solidly in a game of Ticket to Ride I headed home on the Scooter and that's how I ended up with his Orange Jacket mentioned in the last post. It was cold and I couldn't feel my hands or ears when I got home but I was happy because it was an awesome weekend.

Next post will recap Mon-Wed of this week which has been awesome as well. The highlights including "My first Econ Test" and "Movie Night at Will's Place". As you enter in the apartment you have the Kitchen and the dining/living room, nobody lives there... although Yeong has fallen asleep on the couch the past two nights. As you head down the hall the first room on your right is Jun and Casey's. Casey is from Spanish Fork and is a BYU student and he showed up on...Monday? I can't recall exactly. He enjoys soccer and playing computer games. He served a mission in South Carolina so we find ourselves reminiscing about the South.

Further down the hall is Yeong and Jeff's room. He's slightly crazy but funny. I'm sure there's going to be some interesting stories involving him (before he left today to go someplace with his friends he took his spudgun and launched two potatoes at a brick wall).

Then there's my roommate Jeff. He actually appeared last Sunday night if I'm not mistaken. For the past week he's been showing up at about 12:30 each night. He's getting married Oct 18th. He's been spending the summer living with his sister in Orem or something like that. Once Jeff get's married his soon to be Brother-in-Law Mike will move in. Mike came to church with us today and he's a pretty fun guy, he wore a bowtie.

Update: Jeff just had me sign a Jenga Brick so that I can be remembered.

What Is This Feeling, So Sudden and New?

I opened up my Econ Text book and I found myself thourghly enjoying the contents within...

Swimming

Notice the bright pink shirt, yeah, I'm just that cool.

It's official, I'm out of shape. Monday was the first day for me to actually swim in my class. I'm taking Intermediate Swimming and it's going to be great! If you don't count the one time I went right after I got home from the Mission I haven't been swimming in almost 2 and a half years. We jumped in the pool and I did 150 yds for my warm up, we then timed a 650 yd trial and I cooled down with 200 yds. My first day swimming I jump in and do 1000 yds. Afterwards I was pretty beat. Just ask Amber and Brent, I went the their house in the afternoon to do laundry and do a little studying while I was waiting. I couldn't do it, I passed out on their living room floor, I was out. If I had a picture of me on the ground I'd post it but I don't.

Instead I get to post the things I got to improve my swimming. Fisrt, the googles. The actual name for these googles is Swedish Original Monterbara Googles with UV Eye Protection but I just call them "Sweeds" for short. Notice that what is keeping the lenses (if you call them that) together is a peice of string, I tied that string. In fact, I threaded it throungh the lenses. I placed the rubber nose protector on them. I assembled the whole thing. If you look closely at the back of the lenses you might be concerned that there are no pads on the back. I know, and it's amazing, they don't hurt. In fact they feel great. I highly recommend them. They're only $4.50.

Next come the jammers of last year's style. I'm just noticing now that the color on my googles and the jammers is the same, shows you how much I pay attention. I didn't even choose the color on the jammers. I ordered them online and since it's last years design I just tell them the size and they send me a color at random. I think that whoever packaged my order decided to match them.

So there you have it. I'm going to rule this pool. I'm going to be a speed demon. No one shall be able to keep up with me. This is great preparation for the Triatholon that Brent, Amber and I are going to be doing next year. Don't worry, it's not going to be a full one. It's nice and small but a triatholon none the less.

English Lessons

I came into the apartment the other day and I found Jun and Yeong sitting at the table and they asked me what was up. Yeong then asked me if I knew any other slang terms that might be useful. (Not that "word" is really that useful). Jun then said that Californians like to describe things as being "Sick" when really they're cool. I like how he specifically called out the Californians on that one. Cookies!

It just so happened that part of my shopping was getting random baking ingredients, with those and a few ingredients left by the previous roommates (vanilla, butter, chocolate chips) we created a poor batch of cookies using the Toll House Recipe.

Cooked a little too long and came out a little too flat...

Jun has never had homemade cookies and he was very intrigued by what was doing. After I had finished the cookie dough I had a bitof it and I offered it to Jun. He wasn't sure what to do and then I told him to eat it. His eyes lit up like a child that was let loose in a candy store. All he could do was bring his hands up to his mouth and make circular motions and syaing "It's so... It's so... Sweet! It's so good!" He enjoyed the dough. Then I baked the cookies and like I said they didn't turn out quite as I had hoped but they were still good. I just made on pan on Monday night and they were eaten by the three of us (Yeong was there but he didn't say much, he did like them though).

...that didn't matter to Jun

I came home on Tuesday and made the rest of them, had a few and then went out to do some stuff when I came home that night Jun apologized for eating the rest of them. I didn't mind, he just might reach his goal of becoming fat if he keeps it up (he can't though, all he eats is rice, dried fish, seaweed and rotten cabbage he calls kimchi).

And It Doesn't Look a Mile Over 5,000...

It happened yesterday. For almost half a month I've been keeping an eye on the odometer, making sure that I wasn't going to miss this special occasion. Saturday I made my weekly trek to Brent and Amber's so that I could do my laundry and I saw that it was about it turn so after dropping off my cloths I took a spin around the block then went to the church parking lot of photograph the occasion of it going from this...

...to this...

Afterwards Brent and I took apart the dashboard and he barely pushed in a group of wires and the gas and oil lights began working again. I paid more attention to rankings, I paid more attention to conferences and I paid more attention to how I looked when I went to the game.

Back when I was in Montgomery I was walking through the Wal-Mart on Ann St (I'm sure you're all familiar with that one) and in the salon that they have there I saw a bottle of Blue Ice Spiker Gel for 60% off. It was just too good of a deal to pass up. At that point football season may have been 6 months away but that wasn't going to stop me from getting prepared.

So there I was decked out with blue hair and all and it was off to the game I went. And from there things didn't turn out quite as planned. It turns out that Jonah's Sportspass never made it through and so he won't be atteneding the games. Truely a tragity. I got to my seat on the East Blechers about ten rows from the top 20 minutes before the game started. The sun was beating on me and at that point some common sense kicked in and I thought to myself "I am going to get fried out here, I need sunblock. My hair is spiked and my scalp is exposed, that's going to kill!" I called my dad to see if he had any sunblock at the game, but he didn't. I went over to go see him and John anyway and it just so happened that they had bought new hats so my Dad let me use his old one. That is one of the few times that you will see me wearing a hat when I'm not forced to at work, I'm not a hat person.

The game didn't turn out as well as I had hopped. Sure we won 41-17 but there were too many fumbles and they just didn't look as sharp as the Crimson Tide did against Clemson. Roll Tide!

Results

Yeong is in the left and Jun is on the right

He's okay! The answer is quite simple, my new roommate has tested positive for Tuberculosis.

On Monday of this week it was just me and my Korean roommate, Jun, living in our apartment made for six. It was nice, nobody else's dishes to deal with, no having to share a bathroom. On Tuesday morning a sleepingbag appeared on the bed in my room. I was informed that it belonged to a guy moving in named Jeff. That was okay, I was expecting a kid named Jeff to move in. The odd thing is that to this day I have never laid eyes on Jeff. A sleepingbag is on his bed but it hasn't been touched. Then, Tuesday evening Yeong (pronounced Young) moved in. He too is from Korea. I think it's rather easy to tell Jun and Yeong apart but one of Jun's Korean friends saw Yeong and thought it was Jun and thinks they look very similar. He was shocked I could tell them apart.

As most of you know I work at Jamba Juice. It's a great working environment and I enjoy it. Today as I was at Jamba I was in the back and I felt my phone vibrate. I pulled it out and saw that I had a new voicemail. I didn't recognize the number that I missed and I thought I should check it because it might have been from an HR lady that I try as I might I can't get ahold of (more on that in another post). Well, it wasn't her. Rather it was a lady from my aprtment complex telling me that it was extreemly important I call her back before I return to my apartment. I thought I'd call her back right then, even though we are not supposed to have our phones on us at work I thought this sounded important. It was. It turns out that Yeong's TB test came up positive. She was calling me to tell me that the code to our apartment had been changed, we were not to go in without a mask and that she had booked a hotel room for us to stay in if we need it that our meals would be on the apartment complex. Yeong would have some more testing done and we would see if he really does have tuberculosis.

Meanwhile, here's the place that I get to spend the night. It's not much but at least I don't have to sleep on Brent on Amber's couch. It's not that I wouldn't mind, I just don't know how they would react. They have a newborn and I'm kicked out of my place because of a TB scare... They are kind enough to let me use their computer this evening though for my first blog entry, after I washed up and didn't touch anything or come near Elizabeth.

I'll be sharing the room with a Jeff. I say "a Jeff" because I found out talking to the apartment lady that there are going to be two kids named Jeff in my apartment. Two Jeff's and two Koreans... Well, two Koreans if one of them isn't shipped out of the country. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

So that's it for this entry.
